Well, with silver at $15 an ounce, to buy a sandwich at Subways would be a third of an ounce.

Dinner for two would be 3-4 ounces of silver.

If you were to try and pay with gold, at $1100 an ounce, you'd need .01 ounces for the sandwich and .05 ounces for the dinner.

The latter is is 1.5 grams, which is 3/5ths the mass of a penny.

However, since the density of gold is about three times that of a penny, you'd have a small flake that is easily lost.

And with the regular fluctuating prices of silver and gold, this wouldn't be a festering pain in the ass at all. Not to mention that we probably couldn't import enough silver and gold into the state to replace U.S. currency, and not to mention the fact that WE'RE STILL A PART OF THE UNITED STATES.
