Vermont has become the fourth state to legalize gay marriage.

And the first to do it through the legislature.

Yes, they passed a bill making it legal, the governor of Vermont vetoed it, and the legislature then got enough support to override the veto.

I will repeat: Well, damn.

California will get its act together, once enough of the old folks out there die. (My brother pointed out that in the highest age demographic, Prop 8 passed something like 2-1 or 3-1, I can't recall which, but in the age demographics of younger people, it failed along the same ratios.)

*nod* This is true, but the annoying thing we're looking at is this:
1. A bill to remove the word marriage from all state law and instead change the language to "domestic partnership" thus making Prop 8 a moot point.
2. Having to once again jump through the hoops of attempting to re-amend the constitution.

I just hope that the judges work out whether or not Prop 8 was done correctly or not (in the favor of the non-homo-hating people).

I love the for once it's not done through the courts, so the fundies can't complain about "activist judges."

Oh yeah, I'm sure the (not at ALL hypocritical) lawsuit to try to convince their state courts to strike the law down as unconstitutional is already in the works.

And then they'll find a way to complain about the judges when they lose...

I can't see how granting a segment of the population of the state the rights that the rest already enjoy is an unconstitutional act. But hey, I'm not a lawyer.

And dammit neither of these states is near enough to Texas that my sister and her wife can easily go and be married "officially".

*nod* The Deep South is going to be the last region of the U.S. that allows gay marriage. (In fact, I'm willing to bet South Carolina or Texas will be the last state that allows it, if it goes state by state.)
