[WoW] Continued slapping of devs
So, a few days ago, I mentioned that the World of Warcraft "official response" (aka "fuck you") to Engineering had been posted. Since then, that thread has had over 2300 replies. Over 85,000 views. (That's replies and views on the WoW forums. I'm not going to pretend my LJ is anywhere near that popular.)
Of course, there's only been the one Blue response on the thread, which started the whole "bitchslap a dev" feeling... and Blizzard's "April Fools" joke? It's mount customizations (along the lines of barbershops for characters.) Between that and the "Nerf Engineering" achievement (yes, it's an actual achievement. It has to to with beating a Ulduar boss under certain conditions.), Engineers are just feeling the love.
*sigh*
I shouldn't let a game irk me this much.

Armor patch kits are about all I turn out anymore. Or the rare PvP starter set.
All tailoring does is bags and spell threads.
Blacksmithing is the belt buckle.
Alchemy gets some work as the flasks are nice.
JC and inscriptions are the only ones seeing semi-steady work, as each time you upgrade a gem item, you need to get new gems. And inscribers (scriveners?) make some cash turning out cards.

Engineering? Well.... not as much. In fact, even after 3.1, assuming the stat buffs to the Flexweave Underlay and the Nitro Boosts stay as they are now on the PTR, they're still statistical downgrades. (Yes, the Flexweave Underlay is only going to be a drop of a very small amount of DPS, armor, and Crit %, but the fact of the matter is, no other profession loses anything by using their profession bonuses.)
Jewelcrafting has a daily quest.
Cooking has a daily quest.
Fishing is going to get a daily quest.
Alchemy and Inscription have research abilities.
Engineering has neither a daily, nor research abilities.
Engineering is also the only profession that can specialize, yet has to drop the profession to change specializations.
Engineering is also the only profession that has recipes that the Engineer cannot learn at all, not just based on specializations (which one would expect), but based on the class of the Engineer.
Engineering is also the only profession where our items can backfire, and it's considered part of the profession that this is so. (How many points do we get back in the itemization budget for that backfire chance? None? Sad....)
Would it really kill the devs to give us some new stuff in Ulduar? Well, yes, apparently, it would. There is still nothing in Ulduar, the biggest technological instance since Gnomeregan, for Engineers. But hey, Mimiron can drop Tailoring recipes. Apparently, he's been practicing his needlework.

So, mining, assuming you have it, will give you extra hp.
JC has a daily quest because they decided to make each recipe require something like 5 tokens. And you can get 1 per day. So, months of daily quests just to get the recipes. For LWs, I got my recipes in a matter of days.
Don't count cooking, because it doesn't count to the limit.
Same with fishing and it is really the only way to get people to fish.
Alchemy and inscription fit with the research bits. "I mix this and this and wow! Green sludge."
LW, Smithing and Tailoring have neither a daily nor research.
Yes, the changing specs bit for Engineering does blow and should be fixed.
The other crafting professions have BoP output that certain classes if they have the recipe will never make. My warrior is a hammersmith, but the BC one handed hammer restores mana. So based off of class, while not specifically mentioned in some of those recipes is sort of understood.
What is the backfire rate? Does it destroy the item? Does the item provide such a bonus in line with other items of comparable level (i.e. same/similar stats or effects?) or is it slightly better or worse?
Yes, you are getting screwed over in Ulduar. What there should be is something similar to the Alchemy caches for engineering. Engineering caches, but only on appropriate bosses, as I can't imagine that all the bosses are tech-based. Give those caches some items (maybe a chance on a piece or two of the motorcycle vendor equipment) and a small chance of a recipe.

JC still has a daily quest. If nothing else, they can use it to buy uncut Dragon's Eye gems, which they can then turn around and sell for around 100 gold. Oh, and some of the recipes cost 2 tokens. Some cost 3, 4, or 6. The meta cuts cost 5. And they're not required to get them all. And there is a random world drop that they can turn in to get extra tokens.
Cooking still provides more of a bonus then engineering gets, regardless of the fact that it's a secondary profession.
Only way to get people to fish? Um, have you never seen people fishing in the Dalaran fountain? They're mostly after those damn coins.
And engineering doesn't fit with the idea of research?
And the problem with restricting items that you can learn based off of class (which doesn't affect any other profession), is that you have bone-headed fucking moves on Blizzard's part which lead to the fact that it took them 2.5 months to fix the "oops" that lead to druids not being able to make the DPS engineering helm.
Oh, and Bornakk pretty much admitted that despite much of the instance being tech related, they pretty much forgot that Engineering existed. Yeah, the first boss is only a goddamned mechanical vehicle, there's a giant robot boss, and another boss where the end fight is fucking Voltron, but apparently, Alzheimer's is goddamned rampant over there, or they're doing massive amounts of crack.

For the JC tokens, you are still talking weeks just to get the cuts you really want and then there's the desire to just keep getting them, until you burn out.
Fishing is uber boring. And the people fishing in fountains are, as you said, trying only to get the coins to get the achievement.
With the way Blizz has set up the research, no engineering doesn't fit. They are using minimal mats to 'experiment' and maybe get something new. To do the same for engineering, while nice, doesn't quite fit. You would actually need to have several smaller devices that you would 'experiment' with (i.e. nail to each other) and see if you get a new combination. Honestly, I would prefer to see something similar to the old EQ crafting in that regards. But items X, Y and Z in a box and see if you can make something.
For the helmets being restricted by class, Blizz hasn't really figured out that sometimes people downgrade armor based on stats. A healadin doesn't need to be encased in plate if they have mail that helps more for their healing. A hunter can be just as much of a badass in leather as in mail.
As for forgetting that engineering existed, yeah, no excuse for that.
