Was at work for almost 12 hours today. I already have 48 hours put in this week AND I still have to go in tonight. (Plus, the manager asked me if I wanted to work Sunday and Monday. Alas, I cannot. My brain would forcibly eject itself from my skull if I tried to work 12 days in a row with no days off.)

Bonuses of working this much include more money on my next paycheck, which will also include Labor Day pay. I don't work that day, but I still get holiday pay. So there's at least one good thing from FedEx taking over. (I don't recall getting paid for Labor Day before. I mean, I may have, but I don't think so.)

Still, I remain convinced that there is some subliminal cue that requires customers to act like morons when they hear the phrase "Thank you for calling FedEx Kinko's. How may I help you?" Twice this morning I was asked "Is my job ready?" No mention of what their job was, or even more importantly who they were. Just "Is my job ready?"

My response? "I don't know. Who is this, please?" Although Marshall (one of our assistant managers) said I should make up a name and respond with it. "Yes, Mr. Carruthers, your job is ready." "My name isn't Carruthers!" "Oh? Who are you then?" Likely though, that would backfire and the Manager would ask me pointed questions about being rude to customers. One of the two was an absolute dick when I asked who he was, like I'm supposed to have a genetic tag and trace installed in the phone system, or something. The other... well, I can't get too angry at someone who we're running a $7000+ job for. Besides, she was nice.

Here's the thing. I'm generally not rude to customers. Yes, shockingly, I am not. I am rude about customers. There is a difference. I see no credible reason why otherwise potentially sane and intelligent people would wait until three in the morning to ask silly questions like "If I come down there now, can you run some copies for me?" or the perenial favorite "I need some copies made. How much is it?" (No indication of anything related to what the job actually is. I'm apparently supposed to be telepathic.)

On a different note, I did get to talk to a couple SC Guard guys who are going with their unit to New Orleans to help out. They said they're going to be there by tonight. They were getting copies of large scale street maps of New Orleans printed out, so I'm guessing they're going to be doing more of the patrolling and maybe SAR rather then actively deterring looters and such.
