Ye gods

I have just seen a trailer for the remake of Willie Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. Earlier posts reveal my views on remakes.

Now, mind you, I think Depp is a good actor, and I loved Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl, where he stole the entire damn movie away from everyone else in the film.

However... is Wonka supposed to come across as a closet pedophile? I mean, seriously, I saw a 30-second trailer and I was like, damn. Kids, you need an adult.

Actually...

From the book, I always assumed he WAS a pedo...

Why else do you think he had those damned lil Umpa-Lumpas?

You never got that from the original movie? Christ, where have you been?

Roald Dahl, when not writing children's literature, wrote some "pretty freaky shit," as you may know. Perhaps the pedophiliac undertones would only suit his original intentions...?

Firstly, it's not a remake of Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, it's a book-to-movie adaptation of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, and has nothing to do with the previous film.

Secondly, yes, yes he is. He's a sinister and slightly scary man who tries to relive his childhood, and entices children with sweets and chocolates. He's definitely paedophilic, just, y'know, without the actual sex.

Sorry, but...

He reminded me of Angela Lansbury on Lithium. Crossed with that alarming older fashion editor from the original Old Navy ads. You know, the older woman with the particularly owl-like spectacles?
I didn't think "pedophilia" as much as "locks children up in old trunks that smell of mothballs, and stacks them in the attic ten deep"
