I just want to know... WHY. I mean, I kinda understand how Sarah Palin got tapped. McCain wanted a way to change the conversation and excite the base, he had a bit of momentum from having a woman for VP - there were reasons to do it even if the woman had her issues.

What is he gaining from tapping Ryan? The support of the Wall Street Journal? Were his largest donors telling him to do it? Who is going to be happy about this that wasn't already going to vote for him?

And he released the news on a SATURDAY?

One of the leading theories on the timing of this is that it was outside a normal news cycle, and when a lot of people aren't at home.

By doing it on a Saturday, the first pass of controversial articles are already out of cycle by the time people get back from their vacations.
