And I'm sure he would make the argument that "both parties were consenting adults under the eyes of the lord" or some such bullshit. Its not that I don't agree that consenting adults should be allowed if they want, its that someone will use it as an excuse to fuck kids legally as they see it.
"My Holy Book of Jeebus says girl is of an age to know a man at 13, so that there's a consentin adult, and we been tellin' her that since she was 4...so its all good, right?"
That's why I don't like it - but if you could figure a way to NOT have that argument used...feck all if I care what a bunch of adults do, long as they ain't doing it on the hood of my car...while I'm trying to go to work."
Warren Jeffs was a pedophile who used religious bigamy as an excuse to get away with fucking kids. Consenting adults who want to marry in pairs or threes or fucking harems are minding their *own* business.
See response above. I have no problems with adults doing what ever floats their boat, but eventually, someone like Jeffs will use it as an excuse. That I have problems with. If they could figure out a way to make damn sure it was just consenting adults who know the score then who cares. At that point it becomes like gay marriage to me - none of my business, and if it makes them happy go for it.
Likewise, I believe consenting adults should have license for what they like. This issue for me is not just asshats like Jeffs....but religious brainwashing in general. If you tell a girl from age two onwards that it is her duty to be in a harem for Jeezus, it really ceases to matter how old she is or is not.
Marriage for religious reasons squicks me out, period, even when it is one on one.
