feh

The hub (one of the computers in the apartment) is emitting a high-pitched whine. It gets rather annoying. It's not the speakers, because it doesn't have any, and besides which, I muted the sound. It's not, as far as I can tell, a fan bearing, because when it stops I can still hear the fan. (Also, when the computer is in "shut down" mode, the whine stops, the fan doesn't.)

It's only driving me slightly crazy.

Kick it. Seriously. Not hard, just enough to knock whatever is outta whack back into place.

It's not mine. It belongs to the roomie. (Okay, I did give it a slight whack, but not much.) However, it seems to have been the monitor, and leaving that off seems to have solved the problem.

Monitors can do that, not sure if you have a monitor next to it though. My old one did that and it used to drive me crazy since it was just on the limit of hearing with the computer humming next to me as well.

There is a monitor for this computer, yes. And I swear, I tried turning it off to see if that did it. Now, when I did it yesterday, as I recall, it didn't work. The monitor, however, is off right now (and has been since I got up, save for minor rebooting of LAN things), and it hasn't made the high-pitched whine yet today.

Perhaps that is the problem. At least the headaches caused by the whine are gone. (Now I just have the headaches caused by my sleep schedule being disrupted, which happens practically every Sunday-Tuesday).

Thanks.
