posting from roomie's computer again. My computer is now well and truly fucked. At this point, I've run chkdsk /r, and it didn't help at all.

Wehn my computer finally boots up, it seemingly can't find anything in the MFT (Master File Table), and my desktop is completely gone.

I think I'm going to have to do a full re-install of Windows XP and hope that fixes the goddamn problem.

I really wish I'd backed up my files.... it's going to take forever to replace the mp3s. Most everything else, I still have the disks for.

Still, the reinstall will wait until I get some sleep.

Edit: Oh, since my computer (and e-mail program on said computer) is currently doing a paperweight impression, anyone who needs to e-mail me, use my yahoo address. (Those who may need it, know it. Those who don't know it, well, you obviously don't need it, now do you?)

This really bites.

i had my first somewhat serious HD crash a few weeks ago. definately put the fear into me!
you should know what resulted.
now have turned piii 850 dell in the back into coding machine / file server with two 120 gig WD drives raid 1 mirroring. if one drive fails, still have aaalll my good shizzle

was very comforting when i moved the 15 gig of mp3's to that array...

PLease try my suggestion for the reinstall before formatting the drive. Or if you have a second drive install windows on that and then access the drive and get your stuff of of ti before formatting. Don't format if you don't have to. If all else fails, pop the drive into roomie's machine and copy your stuff over or burn it then then format the drive.

Okay, so I should (if everything else fails) just install windows on C:\Blah\ instead of straight on C:\?

I only have one partition on my drive...
