blah... computer still broken
Found my XP install CD, did a repair on windows. Didn't help.
Oh, it actually loads Windows now... sort of. What happens is that it still hangs in safe mode at the same file (agp440.sys), but if I tell it to boot up in the "last successful configuration", it actually almost boots up.
What it does is go all the way through the XP load screen (the little green scrolling bar), but then, instead of loading any kind of login screen or going to the windows GUI... nothing. Black screen. Not even the blue screen of death. Just black. Not an error message, not a new page. Just black.
This sucks. Exceptionally.

It's a W2K forum, but a few people mention XP. Perhaps something one of them tried there might help?

i've run into problems similar to this roughly 4-5 times.
ONE time, the heatsink had fallen off of the cpu. easy fix.
the OTHER times... bad motherboard...
replace motherboard, turn it on, and voila, everything worked just hunky dory!
