Well, it's working. Mostly.

New computer (aka Gray-Hermit) is set up. The old computer (Dark-Tower) is either going to be turned into little more then a repository for mp3s, or cleaned up and given away.

I have turned off that Aero crap (Oh look, it's Vista, but with the look and feel of Windows Classic), moved all my mp3s over, and gotten WoW and the Lich King beta reinstalled. I still need to put Photoshop, ImageReady, and Bryce back on here, but now I have the damn space to do so... 500 Gb hard drive is nice. Got my e-mail set back up, Firefox 3 installed (and a theme that doesn't look like ass), and mostly tweaked the way I want it.

Oh, and I've already checked. I can turn all the graphics in WoW up to full and it runs better that way then my old computer did. Hell, I could probably run City of Heroes during a Rikti Invasion and not have issues now. (Okay, probably still some issues. Rikti invasions thrash video cards like you wouldn't believe.)

How much onboard memory and what kind of video card/memory are you using.

[identity profile] kierthos.livejournal.com 2008-08-30 05:37 pm (UTC)(link)
3 Gigs of RAM, and the video card is a ATI Radeon 2600 XT with 256 MB.

My new computer, when it arrives, will have 4 GB of RAM, and a 2GB graphics card. Oh, and I stayed w/XP.

[identity profile] kierthos.livejournal.com 2008-08-30 06:53 pm (UTC)(link)
My condolences. I believe XP will not be able to address all that memory.

[identity profile] mithras.livejournal.com 2008-08-30 07:01 pm (UTC)(link)
You are quite correct.

He will have ~1.5 GB of system RAM that he will be unable to utilize.

Plus some of that video memory.

Actually XP can address 3 GB of that. I know because the system I am currently using can do so.

And XP is merely the 'interim' OS until MS comes out with the next version of Windows (which won't really fix any of the issues in Vista, but still).

You know what's weird though? Everyone I know who rags on Vista said I'd hate it.

I turned like three things off and I am having no problems at ALL.

[identity profile] mithras.livejournal.com 2008-08-30 07:09 pm (UTC)(link)
No.

Windows XP can address 4 GB total of space.

The motherboard and devices take up some of that space.

For it to map to 2 GB of video card memory, it has to lose 2 GB of addressable space.

So you're going to lose a significant amount of the RAM to address your video memory. The OS will likely decide not to address the entire video memory, thus giving you more for RAM.

This is what my estimation of ~1.5 GB of RAM and some video memory is off of.

Whenever I decide to upgrade OS's I will also put more memory in. The processor is a 64bit processor, so that's not an issue. I just don't feel like going to Vista yet, with it's issues.

You assume that your hardware will be compatible with whatever MS decides to release as their next OS.

Also, a lot of the issues with Vista have been addressed. It's significantly better (but still not phenominal) than it was at release.

Basically, you paid a few hundred extra for parts of your computer to sit around and fuck off.

[identity profile] egearman.livejournal.com 2008-08-30 08:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Until I am satisfied with Vista, yes, quite probably.

[identity profile] mithras.livejournal.com 2008-08-31 10:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Which may be never, since you're a picky bastard.

And going with your "I'm waiting for the next OS", that's 2 years away.

The hardware you currently have will be obsolute (effectively) by them, in that it won't have the capability to run (at great effectiveness) games that are out then.

Congratulations, you paid extra money for an inefficient way to heat your house.

Incidentally, what graphics card are you getting? 2GB on the card is bad-ass, but based on how smoothly WoW is running for me off of what I now have, it would be overkill for me. I'm just curious.

[identity profile] egearman.livejournal.com 2008-08-30 07:32 pm (UTC)(link)
ATI Radeon HD 4870-X2 DDR5 2GB PCI-Express x16

[identity profile] kierthos.livejournal.com 2008-08-30 09:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Also, out of curiosity, what game do you play that you need that for?

[identity profile] egearman.livejournal.com 2008-08-30 10:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Nothing currently that 'needs' it. It is, however, what I can afford to get.
