I would like to be in the Wrath of the Lich King beta

If for no other reason then to continually browbeat the devs over the state of Engineering.

Unfortunately, unlike [livejournal.com profile] mithras, I don't think I have anyone in the way of peeps who can get me in.

This sucks.

I know. Want deathknight...

[identity profile] kierthos.livejournal.com 2008-08-05 03:48 pm (UTC)(link)
*nod* I'd like to try it out too. But mainly, I want to send in beta testing messages saying "There's nothing in Engineering yet" every hour.

[identity profile] egearman.livejournal.com 2008-08-05 03:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Aaaaaaaand that's why you won't get a beta invite.

[identity profile] kierthos.livejournal.com 2008-08-05 03:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Dude, they've got intro stuff for each crafting profession except for two... Tailoring and Engineering. And do you really think they're going to ignore Tailoring?

And the Devs need someone to beat them with sticks over this....

[identity profile] egearman.livejournal.com 2008-08-05 03:56 pm (UTC)(link)
They are probably still working out the nuts and bolts of what they are going to add.

And it's mainly nuts and bolts.

[identity profile] kierthos.livejournal.com 2008-08-05 04:04 pm (UTC)(link)
See, that's part of the problem. With a few rare exceptions (like Tailors turning pieces of cloth into bolts of cloth), there's hardly any other "make this part and then make this part so you can finally make the finished piece".

I mean, in Blacksmithing, you don't have to make the hilt of the sword separately from the blade, and then put them together. No, you get the mats and you make it in one fell swoop.

What I fully expect (if they remember about Engineering) is that we'll have something between one and two dozen new parts, a couple expensive (and thus never used) explosives, some more flavor crap stuff (the new version of smoke flares), and maybe one good item. And then, nine months later, we'll have a second good item.

[identity profile] egearman.livejournal.com 2008-08-05 04:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Still can't be as expensive as the higher end blacksmith recipes. The number of components required for some of those recipes is insane.

[identity profile] halaku.livejournal.com 2008-08-05 04:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Tell me about it.

I will cry the day I sell my Stormherald after it eventually becomes obsolete...

[identity profile] kierthos.livejournal.com 2008-08-05 04:47 pm (UTC)(link)
And odds are good that there will be some badass weapon to replace it in WotLK. Judging by the early armor recipes in WotLK, Blacksmiths are going to be happy again for a while.

[identity profile] egearman.livejournal.com 2008-08-05 04:54 pm (UTC)(link)
I didn't even get that far... my smith is sitting at 370 blacksmithing because there is really no point. Plus I am having a lot more fun playing a druid then I ever did my warrior.

I've got Thunder and once I respecced to prot, it was semi-pointless to keep it equipped all the time.

Now I'm just saving badges to get a newer druid staff.

I'm going to cry when all of my purple gear gets replaced w/greens.

[identity profile] halaku.livejournal.com 2008-08-05 04:57 pm (UTC)(link)
I decided to push it on the theory that we'll see another step in the tier in WotLK. Thunder to Deep Thunder to Stormherald to ??, perhaps?

[identity profile] egearman.livejournal.com 2008-08-05 05:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Maybe... But I'd still have to get ahold of the various nether bits and switch back to arms for my warrior... dunno.

Leatherworking is a bit more reasonable in that respect.

[identity profile] kierthos.livejournal.com 2008-08-05 04:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, but you also don't have to worry about the fucking head of the hammer falling off at inconvenient times. And you had those (or the majority of them) at your trainer at the launch of BC.

[identity profile] egearman.livejournal.com 2008-08-05 04:59 pm (UTC)(link)
What do you want? Engineering is the realm of the goblins and the gnomes. The gnomes who, to this day, can't reclaim their city. And as far as the goblins are concerned, the sooner it blows up, the sooner you have to buy another from them.

There are recipes that require 80 or more ore just to make. And that's just the ore requirement.

[identity profile] kierthos.livejournal.com 2008-08-05 05:48 pm (UTC)(link)
The problem isn't the failure rate by itself. It's the cost of creating the item, combined with the failure rate, and then combined with the "Oh, let's nerf it" aspect.

Like with, say, the Rocket boots, the Nigh Invulnerability belt, and so forth.

As for the material cost, at least once you make it, you know it works. What do we get? Aside from the goggles (the upgrades of which are practically inaccessible, because Blizzard decided to fuck us over on that), we have explosives which might as well just create an at-use item that explodes 5-10 gold, a belt that requires 20 Primals that can backfire, and rocket boots that have been nerfed multiple times. We had a fairly unique item in a parachute cloak (that could fail) until Blizzard added it to Skyguard rep, and it never fails. We had unique combat pets until Blizzard decided not to upgrade them for BC materials (but had no problem giving them to Jewelcrafters or as rep rewards).

High material cost? We have ONE epic gun that is only good for one class (and requires 40 Khorium ore, plus 48 Fel Iron ore and 32 Eternium ore, AND 60 Adamantite ore, not to mention the 24 Primals it takes (12 fire, 12 air), and it's not even upgradeable), and a high end scope that requires 120 Adamantite ore to make (in addition to the Felsteel and rare gems).

And don't get me started on the ROFLcopter....

Engineering needs a lot of help, and Blizzard isn't winning any converts to the idea that they have something planned.

And there is still no concrete source that those are made by Engineers or aren't, in fact, some sort of special mount for the PvP area, Lake Wintergrasp.

Because there are going to be mechanical (http://static.mmo-champion.com/mmoc/images/wotlk/ingameshots/lakewintergrasp/lakewintergrasp_05.jpg) items (http://static.mmo-champion.com/mmoc/images/wotlk/ingameshots/lakewintergrasp/lakewintergrasp_06.jpg) for players to use.

[identity profile] halaku.livejournal.com 2008-08-05 06:12 pm (UTC)(link)
ROFLcopter!

Don't forget the upcoming motorcycles.

[identity profile] kierthos.livejournal.com 2008-08-05 06:53 pm (UTC)(link)
We still don't know if those are going to be Engineering crafted or not. It may be stuff for use in the Lake Wintergrasp PvP area.

[identity profile] morinon.livejournal.com 2008-08-05 04:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Dear Blizzard: please give me a beta key so I can incessantly hound you about engineering, which will likely have the effect of giving you less time to work on engineering, which will prove the assumptions I have started out with.

[identity profile] kierthos.livejournal.com 2008-08-05 04:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Not incessantly. And contrary to what I stated above, I really wouldn't send in a beta note every hour about it. But I would like to be in beta so I can give my opinions on Engineering as well as other professions. (Okay, mostly Engineering.) Blizzard really doesn't need to drop the ball on Engineering again, and I'm afraid they're going to.

[identity profile] morinon.livejournal.com 2008-08-05 04:15 pm (UTC)(link)
I figured you wouldn't really do the hourly bit, and yes, some prodding would in fact be highly beneficial. I recommend cattle prods.

I like my engineering.

[identity profile] halaku.livejournal.com 2008-08-05 04:39 pm (UTC)(link)
I keep hoping to get one, and see these promised changes to Paladin myself.

Ret pallys may finally be fun?

[identity profile] egearman.livejournal.com 2008-08-05 05:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Ret pallys are fun now. You just need a backup healer to keep you up.
