DC has been doing this story arc called "Death of the New Gods". Practically all of them are dead at this point... and Darkseid was manipulating things so he would be the last one, but his son, Orion, killed him.
The "Death of the New Gods" arc is one of the arcs leading into their big event for 2008, called "Final Crisis". And it's supposed to shake things up a bit. One of the rumors, apparently now discounted, was that Bruce Wayne (Batman) was going to die during Final Crisis and his spirit was going to become one of the new iteration of New Gods in the Fifth World. (Darkseid and the whole bunch that were just killed off were the Gods of the Fourth World.)
