So I watched the first part of "Tin Man" last night

I have to say, I was actually surprised.

Okay, yes, it's a retelling of "The Wizard of Oz", and God knows I saw enough of those in comic-book form at HeroesCon two years ago. (It seemed like every indie comic press out there has their own version of it and most of them suck.)

But it's actually decent. There's been no major plot-holes thus far, the acting is okay. Some of the special effects sucked, but hey, it's being made for the Sci-Fi channel, and it's not this is the first movie they've had with bad special effects.

Also, Kathleen Robertson as the evil sorceress? Amazingly hot. Although the flying monkey tit-tattoos are a little off-putting.

I actually liked it a lot. And yeah, it wasn't the prettiest movie out there, but I found it enjoyable.

You know, I think that's part of why I like it.

I mean, look at the original movie version of "The Wizard of Oz". All bright colors, very vivid and all... but there's no real sense of that the land is actually in trouble.

I mean, what does the Wicked Witch do? Torments Dorothy slightly, and flies around Emerald City polluting the air with her sky-writing. That's it. Sure, she probably can do more, but we never really see her threatening anything or anyone on a grand scale. It's 'terrify a bunch of midgets, scare a girl, get beaten by a bucket of water."

Look at "Tin Man". Here, the evil sorceress has control over the land with her own army. She tortures and kills those who oppose her, or has them wacked out of their minds on the OZ version of pot. Things are no longer as bright and cheerful as they apparently used to be, but what a shock... an evil sorceress is running things. She's only concerned about her own power, not if the streets are clean and the city walls are glimmering. (I also liked the fact that they're not glossing over the seedier side of things.)

Of course, she's doomed if the good guys are supposed to win, but at least she's doing something with her evil power. And she's really no more incompetent then a lot of other evil overlords, and she's a lot easier on the eyes.

Not what I meant by "pretty" (was referring to the quality of the effects), but I agree with you. It was a nice take on the dystopian Oz.

Oh yeah, the special effects, especially the flying monkeys chasing people down in the ice palace.... that looked like ass.

I used the word 'tit'. I don't want to warp fragile young minds. :P

I'm thinking of taking it back off the adult concepts filter. It seems more of a pain in the ass then anything else.
