That would be the sound of a dream dying.

So, fun at one of the local coffee places. Overheard part of a discussion about philosophy (reallly, viewpoints on good and evil), and I asked one of the people in the discussion if they were a philosophy major. They said they were. I asked what do you with a degree in that.

And then, I left.

That doesn't really matter. I watched class after class of friends graduate from Winthrop University, and very few of them ended up working in the field of their degrees. For a lot of jobs, that you have a degree is important but in what is not, and that you have a degree is important only because degrees have arbitrarily become (usually irrelevant) prerequisites for those jobs.

No kidding. I mean, I should be the last person to judge someone's degree, considering that I have degrees in Mechanical Engineering and Computer Science, and I work at a fucking Kinko's. But it's still kind of funny to see the look on people's faces when they realize "Philosophy degree? Okay, now what?"
