Bellsouth, Verizon, and AT&T hit with federal lawsuit
This is what happens when you fuck over your customers for an illegal request from the NSA.
Qwest Communications comment on the matter was a loud cackling noise as they realized they would not potentially be out billions of dollars and the goodwill of their customers.

If Bellsouth, AT&T and Verizon had the stones and/or common sense that the Qwest CEO showed, this would have been much better. And frankly, the 'excuse' that this will help stop terrorism is bullshit. Al-Qaida has known for a long-ass time that the NSA has the ability to monitor phone communications. So the necessity of this... yeah...
Oh, and in related news, Federal Source to ABC News: We know who you're calling (http://blogs.abcnews.com/theblotter/2006/05/federal_source_.html). Because we all know that stopping news stories that the current administration finds objectionable is needed... or the terrorists will win. (That phrase seems to be the new "Will somebody think about the children" standard-tripe-boilerplate for when the government does something really fucking stupid.)

BTW, if you did your homework, you'd know when the federal law that allows the NSA to do exactly what it did post 9/11 was passed. Everything from Able-Danger, getting phone company records, and the current (as of yet unreported) sattelite spying on the movement of "certain people" on US soil.
Not only are they listening in to you calling into work sick, they have sattelites tracking you going to Wal*Mart to buy toilet paper.
Remember to look up and smile for the sattelite pictures!

OK, I'll admit I have NO idea why QWEST didn't have to comply. But let me reverse it back to you, if they didn't HAVE to comply, then why did AT&T, Verizon and Bell all take the risk??? You can't tell me no one at these three companies didn't forsee that this would be UNPOPULAR if it got out that they went along with the NSA?
Have you noticed that not a SINGLE congressmember has actually propose legislation to STOP any domestic wire-tapping or spying done by the NSA yet? Sure, they're all yelling and screaming about it, but no one has actually suggested that they should STOP.
