And I present to you a crappy picture of some of my RAM

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

I blame the camera. It sucks.

Can anyone tell me what kind of RAM this is? I really would like to know before I even consider buying more, because I'm pretty sure I can't just take any RAM sticks and put them in this computer. (If it helps, the computer is a Dell that's about four years old...)

no.

We would need the text that's on that white tag to the left of the picture.

Crap, I knew I should have written that down... gimme a minute and I'll have it. Going to have to unplug the computer and yank that back out.

The bigger sticker on the left of the picture reads:

KVR266X64C25/256-R
740617061123

(I suspect the bottom number is the part # and not really relevant, but I included on the better then average chance I'm wrong.)

The smaller sticker on the right reads:

9905189-001.A00
1052551-2.5V

Anything else you need?

Since its a dell machine have you tried looking the model up on the website and finding the spec? Or calling their tech support to find out the spec for the memory?

[identity profile] kostika.livejournal.com 2005-12-29 12:33 pm (UTC)(link)
I think that's DDR Ram. The sticker on the memory should say for sure. Also it should say if it is PC100/333/etc. That's all ya really need to know.

I've looked it up online. It does appear to be DDR RAM. The question now is where to go to buy more RAM... I'm thinking newegg.com, but I'm going to price shop a bit first.

You need to know the PC speed. Being that its 4 years old I would guess no faster than PC100.

If you have a Fry's Electronics near you I'd suggest them. Otherwise I don't know where to buy computer parts in the US anymore.

[identity profile] kierthos.livejournal.com 2005-12-29 12:59 pm (UTC)(link)
According to the info I've found online, it's 266 Mhz.

Now, I'm looking at this (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16820141172) as a replacement for one of the sticks of RAM. (Alas, my motherboard only has two RAM bays, and each one has a 256 Mib stick.) If it had three, I'd just add it and have 1.5 Gib of RAM.

[identity profile] kostika.livejournal.com 2005-12-29 01:09 pm (UTC)(link)
The PC speed on that is 2100. Way too fast for your computer. If the PC speed is 266 I wouldn't recommend getting memory any faster than that. The motherboard may not be able to handle it.

I don't want to say you're wrong, because odds are you know tons more about hardware then I do, but according to this (http://www.kingston.com/support/faqs/memory/general_6.asp), the output of 266 Mhz (which is what the stick of RAM is) is PC 2100.

So, unless I'm missing something, isn't the one at newegg that I was looking at just fine? I mean, I'm probably missing something, but I apparently need it explained in small words.

Your computer is 4 years old right? PC2100 didn't exist 4 years ago.

I won't say I'm right cause it might jsut work. Buy it, worse case scenario it doesn't work and you return it. Just make sure you can return it.

Funny as according to the numbers he posted that's Kingston PC2100 already in there.

PC2100 was released in late 2001, also known as exactly four years ago :)

Sorry about being snarky, but it was a short night and you provide such a wonderful target this morning.

[identity profile] kierthos.livejournal.com 2005-12-29 01:32 pm (UTC)(link)
It might have been 3.5 years. I got the computer shortly before Mike moved out to California. So, however long ago that was....

Don't worry. I'm ill and my brain isn't functioning correctly. :oP

And no, I didn't know that off the top of my head, I had to look it up.

Of course it may help if I gave the right link...

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16820141002

That's the exact thing you have in your computer.

I would strongly suggest sticking with Kingston and going with these: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16820144001

looks like DDR - it only has one gap in the teeth at the bottom, the old stuff has two...
