Now, this strikes me as slightly silly.

They're imposing a curfew in the riot-hit cities and towns in France.

Does this strike anyone else as silly? I mean, you have people that are setting cars on fire, breaking windows, etc. They're already breaking the law here. Saying that they have to be in bed by a certain time or they'll be breaking the law is sort of a moot point, isn't it?

I'm reminded of that scene in Heavy Metal where the charges against Captain Stern are being read off and the last one is "...and one moving violation." And that's what the crowd mutters and grumbles at. I can likewise picture a French judge/magistrate/whatever they use likewise saying "You are charged with five counts of destruction of private property, resisting arrest, and being out after 10 o'clock at night."

Still, that isn't even the silliest part... and maybe this is just the way it's being reported, and is not indicitive of what's really going on, but Under the emergency decree, local government officials will be able to put people under house arrest and demand that weapons be handed over. Okay, so wait, they couldn't demand they hand weapons over before?

"Hey, you, stop setting cars on fire."
"Okay officer."
"And hand me that knife."
"No! hahahahahahahaha"

I think it makes a certain sense.

You order a curfew so that after a certain time at night, you're sweeping *everyone* off the streets in a mass detainment. You no longer need to have justifyable cause to believe the individual is a rioter or looter. He's just out of his home at midnight.

If their police force can handle the task, it'll give them several hours of relative order, and oftentimes that's all a riot needs in order to break apart and die down.

I think the house arrest means the police will be able to approach a house, inform everyone inside that they are not allowed to leave, and confiscate any weapons on the preminises. Again, it's just a tactic to isolate the actual riot, more than a desire to punish the people who find themselves under house arrest.

I have a friend on exchange in france at the moment, and the riots have just started in her part of town so the curfew imposed is more for their benefit than to try and stop the rioters.
I'll see if i can make a tag to her journal...

Bah, I say let that baby burn...

And I'd like to quote the following from Dilbert...

PHB: "It is now against company policy to shoot a fellow employee"
Dilbert: "You mean it was alright before?"
PHB: "I don't know... Maybe if you had a permit, and they were in season..."

I'll be FexEx'ing a gallon of lighter-fluid to the roiters... :)
