So, I had canceled my City of Heroes account a couple days ago.

They just announced today that the game is being discontinued, probably by the end of the year. Which is a little weird to see, considering that they just released a new powerset, had another in the pipeline, and were still developing new costume pieces and content.

Sounds like management knew something that the production team didn't.

Considering that a couple of hours before the announcement, the dev team was still posting screenshots of upcoming stuff on Facebook... yeah, probably. NCSoft posted a loss in Q2 of this year, and one of their rivals (Nexon) became a major shareholder in the company.

So, given that City of Heroes isn't one of their big market leaders, it's probably seen by the suits as "getting rid of the deadwood".

Kinda surprised it hung on this long, what with DC Universe and Champions Online being f2p and fairly populated.

Well, City of Heroes was f2p as well... and it still had a decent population. It's just that when compared to the much larger stacks of cash that NCSoft's other major games were bringing in....
