Blizzard is the company that makes World of Warcraft.
Peons 4 Hire is a gold-selling company. Basically, they hire people to create accounts on World of Warcraft to run around and earn gold as fast as possible. Some of these "peons for hire" kill monsters all day long, others collect as many tradeskill components (raw herbs, ores, or whatever) as much as they can, and so forth.
The goal is to have lots of in-game money to sell to other players for real-world money.
Now, recently, Blizzard updated some of their code that makes it really easy to report people who advertise for gold-selling websites (which they would do with great frequency). It's remarkably effective, to the point where I used to get 15-20 gold-spam ads a day, down to zero for yesterday and today.
But Blizzard is going one step further. They are suing one of the companies that is considered to be one of the largest gold-selling sites. Their justification for this (legally, that is), is that Peons 4 Hire (the name of the gold-sellers) is conducting a business inside the confines of Blizzard's "business" (aka World of Warcraft).
You've probably seen, at most business, signs saying "No Soliciting"? Same thing. I mean, okay, sure, it's one thing if someone mentions their landscaping company to someone when they're both in line at the grocery store (for example)... but what Peons 4 Hire was doing was advertising all the time, and doing so in a manner that was disruptive to game play, against the Terms of Service of the game, and possibly in a manner that involved hacking people's accounts.
So Blizzard is suing them. Well, they're initiating a lawsuit. Whether they actually take it to court, or Peons 4 Hire backs down and runs for the hills will determine if this actually goes before a judge.
I'm very familiar with WoW. And Blizzard (buggers still owe me a month of game time...) AND the inevitable craptons of goldfarmer spam. It was bad enough before I canceled my account: the trend indicated that the amount of gold spam was only going to get worse.
What I didn't know was what "Peons 4 Hire" was. I had to dash out the door before I had time to make with the googling. Thanks for the rundown.
*laugh* Another reason why I may fire up the account again and burn off that last month of banked time (instead of letting my money rot in Blizzard's coffers.) One more annoyance nearly done away with. If they could just get rid of all the asshats, it'd be perfect.
