Apparently, the breaking point for his campaign staff was that he went on a cruise with his third wife (the one he's currently married to), rather then stay in the U.S. and glad-hand potential voters.

Now, on one hand, I can sort of see where the campaign staff is coming from. I mean, it's one helluva thing to have on your resume (not to mention what sort of continued job you might have) if the guy you're directly working for becomes President of the United States. So yeah, they wanted him to gut it out for another, what sixteen months? (Or at least until he started getting his ass kicked in the primaries?)

On the other hand.... shit, there are still a handful of people who might be candidates who haven't even officially decided yet. So Gingrich obviously felt he could take a little time off this early in the race, and hey, he's actually doing something with his current wife, instead of trading in on a new model, so what the hell, right?

Let's get something straight. I wouldn't have voted for Gingrich regardless. I think he's a third-rate shithead. I would vote for an alien lizard before voting for him. And I think his campaign would have stalled and/or burned out after the first or second primary anyway. (Don't worry, we're probably going to see the same sort of thing happen with Herman Cain's campaign.)

But I have no sympathy for his campaign staff.... other then that residual sympathy for the fact that they had hitched their wagons to a third-rate shithead.
