So, looks like one of my 1 GB sticks of RAM is bad. It has been pulled and further observational testing awaits. (In other words, if my computer doesn't crash in the next several hours/couple of days, I've probably 'fixed' the problem.)
But it had to be one of the 1 GB sticks. It couldn't be one of the POS 512 MB sticks, noooooo.....
P.S. Firefox, I'm still not happy with you, even if you do put the browser tabs in the right place. You're still a goddamned memory hog. I may download you again if you fix that.
