Judges moves City Council special election to June 15.

See, here's the deal. E.W. Cromartie, soon to be a federal prisoner on tax fraud charges, resigned from his City Councilman seat 29 days before the upcoming election on April 6. (Why we have the election for City Council and Mayor on April 6, I have no fucking clue.)

Anyway, he (and current Mayor Bob Coble) had to know that he was looking at jail time and having to step down from his seat, but he kept that shit under wraps for who knows how long. If he hadn't committed the crimes for which he is going to the federal slam for, he would have run for City Council again and been re-elected as a matter of course. (Since he got on City Council, what, a couple decades ago, he's been re-elected without problems practically every time. Hell, at least a few times, no one has run against him because they wouldn't stand a chance.)

However, since he isn't running, this has inspired several people to throw their hats in the ring for his seat. Problem 1: Name recognition... before the judge made his decision, they had 29 days to get well known enough to try and win the seat. Problem 2: No one who wasn't already registered to vote could actually vote in the election.

You see, if Cromartie had been running, it really wouldn't have mattered. He'd have won. But because he waited until 29 days before the election to step down from his seat, it makes a difference. You see, the election laws here say that you have to have been registered to vote for 30 days prior to the election. Cromartie stepped down 29 days before the election. Coincidence? I think not.

Anyway, the election for his seat has been bumped to June 15th. So, at least there will be some time to actually look at the people running for the seat, and for more people to register to vote.
