I can has beta? Yes I can has.
Aug. 6th, 2008 12:14 pmI'm now in the Wrath of the Lich King beta. Many thanks to the person responsible. (I'm not posting who it was because I'm pretty sure they do not want to be inundated with a bazillion requests for more beta invites.) It took quite some time to download and install the beta, and it didn't want to tell me that I actually hadn't patched it with the most recent updates. I kept having to relaunch it until it finally stopped adding patches.
First thing I did was roll up a Death Knight. Well, two actually. Here's the thing... when Wrath of the Lich King goes live, you can only have one Death Knight character per server. On the test server, however, you can make as many as will fit in the available number of character slots.
Death Knights start at level 55 in a special area that non-Death Knights cannot get to. The huuuuuge quest chain they go through (which ultimately leads to them joining the faction that their race belongs to) can take them to level 58, so what you're going to see is Death Knights immediately going into Outland to level. They probably won't replace their DK quest gear for several levels, though, as it's pretty bad ass. (And it seems to follow the updated-for-BC item costs as regards Stamina.) Also, it looks bad ass. Even when this stuff gets replaced (probably around level 65-66 at latest), I fully expect to store it in the bank so I can walk around looking evil and shit.
Death Knights have three trees - Blood, Frost, and Unholy. It is Blizzard's intention for DKs that no tree be the DPS-specific tree and no tree be the Tanking-specific tree. Rather, it should be possible to DPS and/or Tank with any tree. Having said that, by the time you complete the quest chain (and earn all your talent points), it's obvious to me that Blood is a bit more DPS oriented and Frost is a bit more Tanking oriented. (When Frost Presence, which is basically a Death Knight stance for those of you familiar with Warriors, adds 45% of your armor value... it's more of a tanking tree.)
I have not had a chance to go to Stormwind Harbor yet, but I'll probably be doing that tomorrow, and beginning the exploration of Northrend. (And yes, start complaining about the utter lack of anything in Engineering. Apparently, right now, the only two items in for Engineering are ones that are required for a quest. And yes, there are typos in the items. What a shock.)
