So, I saw Stephen Colbert yesterday.
Oct. 29th, 2007 08:49 amAnd yes, I signed up to get his name on the ballot here in South Carolina.
His campaign promises included the destruction of Georgia, and for good measure, Tennessee.
One of my co-workers (an assistant manager who also happens to be the creative force behind ) made a sign saying "Colbert '08" on it (with Godzilla in the background, of course). After we got there (well, he and his wife were there 20 minutes before me), he wrote another sign on the back of that one saying "I skipped Mass to see Colbert". Both of his signs received a lot of laughter.
My sign was "Truthiness, Justice and the American Way".
Folks, I can't recall the last political rally I've been to, and I'm not really sure this one counts as such, but there were probably 1000 or more people there. And considering that this is a comedian who is "running" for President, that's kind of impressive. All the moreso because it was held at 9 a.m. on a Sunday, and most of the campus populace was still hung over and bitter about the Gamecocks loss the previous night.
One of the truly amusing parts was before Colbert showed up. USC had speakers set up and were playing music over them (they played "Battle Hymn of the Republic" like three times. Not in a row, though), and in one of the breaks between songs, some people over to our left were chanting about stopping global warming. (Now, if you've never seen the Colbert Report, Stephen Colbert is FOR global warming.) So what happens? My assistant manager shouts back at them "You just don't get it!"
There were people draped in American flags, and others with empty pint containers of Ben&Jerry's Stephen Colbert's Americone Dream (yes, the man has his own ice cream flavor. Take that, Obama! :P ).... and one lost and lonely anti-Colbert demonstrator. But even he was accepted in the humor of the moment.
Much fun was had by all.
